The Slave Route/Zanziba

4 Days

Welcome to Zanzibar, an island steeped in history and culture. One of the most significant and sobering aspects of Zanzibar’s past is its role in the slave trade. As you explore this beautiful island, you will come across sites that bear witness to this dark chapter in human history.

In Stone Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you’ll find the old slave market, now an Anglican Cathedral12. This site, which draws more than 100,000 visitors each year3, was once one of the largest slave markets in the world2. The Heritage Centre at the site aims at promoting tolerance, reconciliation, and an inclusive society by telling the story of this dark chapter in the region’s history in an open and factual way1.

Another significant site is the Mangapwani Slave Chamber on Zanzibar Island4. This dark cell, cut into the coral rock, was used as a holding pen to hide slaves after the legal trade was abolished in the late 19th century4. From here, it’s a short walk to a rock outcrop and small bay where slaves would be unloaded from boats4.

These sites serve as a stark reminder of the past and offer a unique opportunity to learn about the history of the slave trade. As you visit these sites, you will gain a deeper understanding of the impact of the slave trade on Zanzibar and the world. This journey through history is a profound experience that will leave you with a greater appreciation for the resilience and spirit of the people of Zanzibar. Welcome to a journey of discovery, reflection, and enlightenment. Welcome to Zanzibar.
